How Does CBD Oil Work for Animals?

So far you may have heard about the benefits of CBD for humans. But, animals may benefit from CBD too, in a very similar way. In fact, both humans and animals have the endocannabinoid system, as every living being with a spinal column. The system we are talking about is present in the brain and the body. So, the scientists came to the conclusion that cannabinoid receptors are present in the skin, immune cells, heart, liver, bone, etc.

In this article, we will explain what endocannabinoids are and how the endocannabinoid system works. That way you can understand better how CBD oil works for animals.

What are endocannabinoids and why are important?

Long story short, endocannabinoids are signaling molecules that interact with cannabinoid receptors. Below we will explain more about the differences between the concepts we mentioned so far. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for a wide range of processes within the body. If we need to mention a few, then, memory, mood, pain, stress, sleep, appetite, and metabolism are some of them. What is important here is that when this system is dysfunctional it can trigger disorders or diseases. Again, if we need to mention a few, then, anxiety, stress, epilepsy, inflammation, and cancer are some of them.

Here is where CBD comes into play because it has a similar chemical structure to the body’s endocannabinoid system. This factor allows cannabinoids like THC and CBD to interact with cannabinoid receptors. Below we will explain more about the whole process and its components.

How does CBD oil work for animals through the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system has 3 components that make everything happen for animals:

  1. The metabolic enzymes –  which have two main purposes: the first is to accelerate endocannabinoid synthesis and the second is to destroy them after they finish their work.
  2. Cannabinoid receptors – which rest in the cell membranes within the body and influence numerous functions in the body. It does so to very important functions such as the immune system, mood, sleep, pain, etc. The science so far knows about two receptors: CB1 and CB2 which affect animals differently. For instance, CB1 receptors are present in the brain and spinal cord and as a result, relate to the central nervous system. On the other hand, CB2 receptors are present in the peripheral tissues and as a result affect inflammatory processes,  the immune system, and also the digestive system.
  3. Endocannabinoids – which as we explained above are fat-like molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors. To make it clearer for you, endocannabinoids are a subtype of cannabinoids. Cannabinoids include phytocannabinoids which derive from plants and endocannabinoids which are endogenous.

What happens when the endocannabinoid system is dysfunctional?

Such a condition triggers a lot of health problems and illnesses and other dysfunctions progress. This dysfunction causes problems on a molecular level and as a result endocannabinoids target inappropriate cells. Products of CBD such as CBD oil have tons of potential to help animals and especially pets. In fact, most humans after getting to know the benefits of CBD oil for themselves started to use CBD oil for pets too.

In conclusion, we can say that CBD oil has similar effects on animals. If you decide to use CBD oil for your pets, then talk to a veterinarian first. That way you can choose the right CBD oil for your pet, the right starting dosage, and way of usage. In order to get the most out of CBD oil, you have to be patient and give it to your pet regularly. CBD oil is safe and it does not cause any unwanted side effects when used properly.
